Diegetic sound is sound which comes from a source within the scene, sound in which the characters can hear swell. For example: radio, TV, doors closing, footsteps, car engine etc.
Diegetic sound help to sell the reality of the story and gives a more professional feel to your piece.
However sometimes diegetic sound can often need a lot of adjusting or rerecording in post due to various reason this is were foley is useful.
Foley, founded by Jack Foley is the art of reproducing sound effects in recording studios through using various objects and materials. Foley is most effect when it is unknown, it is used in almost everything in particular film, almost ever scene will be entirely built around artificial sounds (footsteps, horse galloping, doors opening, swords hitting each other, gun fire, computer typing, writing, and endless other examples).
The use of Foley is a key way in getting a piece which is professional and stands out from other work; however be careful the sound must fit perfectly into the scene otherwise the audio will feel unnatural and capture the attention of the audience, this is not what you want, you want foley which isn't noticed by the audience simply accepted.

Non-diegetic
In contrast to diegetic sound, non-diegetic sound is audio in which the characters within the scene are unable to hear (soundtracks, voice overs).
Non diegetic sound primarily is used to set the tone of the scene and build tension and emotion as of when it is needed.
However within this you can have two different types of formats for diegetic sound - synchronous and asynchronous
Synchronous- matches the tones and feel of the scene to inflict the same emotions on the audience, tension is built in horror scene, sad orchestral music is used in break up/scenes of loss.
Asynchronous- sound contrasts the visual, often used for comical effect, happy upbeat music is used during scenes of sadness or action/fighting. Key example of this is many of the fight scenes from Kick Ass.
